From your Patient Participation Group (PPG)
Every month the Academy Medical Centre Patient Participation Group raises awareness about health and wellbeing.
In June the focus is on Dementia. The information below is also available to download as a PDF.
Dementia is a group of conditions that may be caused by a range of diseases that affect the brain. This may result in changes to brain function, thinking, behaviour, and the ability to carry out everyday tasks. It may be described as progressing over a range of stages: early/mild, moderate, and severe/advanced. The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. Other common types include vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, or dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease.
Talking to someone you know about the problems they are having with their memory can help them to get the support they need. There isn't a right or wrong way to discuss what you’ve noticed. However, it can be a good idea to consider in advance what you want to say.
If you have dementia or have concerns, contact your local surgery for information or advice.
